How the brain makes decisions

I was fortunate to work with a group in Tokyo this week. One evening, we went to the Tokyo Tower. It has glass floors that you can walk across, which is a great reminder of how the brain makes decisions (see image).

System 1 (instinct) was telling me it was unsafe. It made me stop in my tracks.

System 2 (the “Smart” part) was telling me: “It’s fine. No one has fallen through yet. Look there are wires as a backup under the glass.”

It didn’t help at first. System 1 (my gut) was telling me “Stop!” It took a moment but I was able to talk myself into it and step on the glass (as you can tell from the photo). But, it was great reminder of what we all struggle with when we sell our ideas to others.
We often make the mistake of only talking logic to the System 2 of our audience. Don’t forget all the ways Corporate Storytelling helps you deliver what the audience’s System 1 needs to step out onto the glass and say, “Yes” to your ideas.
