Articulate Scientist Workshop

In the movie "Field of Dreams" a mysterious voices tell a farmer "Build it and they will come." Of course, in the movie, the farmer builds a baseball diamond in the middle of a corn field, and people eventually came. Nice story, but that is Hollywood, not reality. Too many technologists believe if they build it, the customers will come. Whether it is software, and new chemical formulation, or an innovative new product, building it is only part of the battle. "Build it and they will come" rarely works in business.

An Articulate Scientist understands this and knows when effective communications will help bring the people to their ideas. The Articulate Scientist Workshop teaches technologists how to articulate and advocate their ideas so that others understand and act on those ideas. This workshop is underpinned by the proven Articulus methodology for persuasive communications and is tailored to the unique needs of scientific people. We turn technologists into advocates.

Technology Focused

As a technologist you have deep skills and understandings of complex ideas. When you apply our process to your communications of those ideas people understand quicker and thus take action faster.

process_driven

Process Driven

You will be taught a process for the construction of your message. Once you understand the process, you can use it repeatedly. A good process makes communications more approachable for scientists, who understand and value procedures. Why not a procedure for persuasive communications?

Articulus trains technologist at a variety of organizations including HP, Oracle, Halliburton, and Tata Technologies. One of the most focused efforts is at Nalco.

Nalco is a chemical company providing solutions that help water treatment, energy, and paper facilities run more efficiently. Scientists play a key role in Nalco's success by researching and developing new and innovative solutions. Nalco employees about 10,000 people and they consider at least 5000 of them "sales people." Because Nalco customer services and sales are so important to customer satisfaction and company growth, they utilize their R&D scientists in customer facing communications. The Articulus Articulate Scientist Workshop has been integrated with great success into the R&D training program. Their scientists are more customer focused, clear, and articulate in customer facing presentations.

Below are two communication examples of what well known Articulate Scientist can achieve. Articulus has NOT trained these people, but we are inspired by their techniques.

Brian Cox is a "Rock Star" physicist at the University of Manchester and involved in the Large Hadron Collider, CERN. To see Dr. Cox in action, take a look at one of his talks. In particular, his description of a presentation to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is fascinating.

Richard Feyman was Nobel Prize winning theoreticalphysicist. His work on the Rogers Commission demonstrates his ability to articulate very complex ideas in a way that others can understand. One of his congressional testimonies is well documented in Visual Explanations by Edward Tufte of which part can be seen here.

Why the Articulate Scientist Workshop

workshop_org

Increasing Complexity

The world is getting more complex and the rate of change is increasing. It is more difficult for people and organizations to understand the innovations they face every day. Articulate Scientists are desperately needed to bridge the gap between the world of science/technology and the world of business and people. We need the scientists to help us make sense of these new ideas. An Articulate Scientist is trained to make those connections and is able to tell the story of how science will affect people.

Scientists are Presenters

Scientists are being asked to interact with customers more and more. We have seen purchasing organizations insist on hearing from the technologists, not sales people. How are you going to prepare this group for those interactions? The Articulate Scientist Workshops aims to make those interactions world class.

Objective

The objective of the workshop is to develop world class communicators that just happen to be scientists. Each participant will learn the Articulus Storyboard Process for the creation technology message. The participants will learn how to apply the process in a variety of situations ranging from sales calls to technology conferences.

How the offering works

The Articulate Scientist Workshop teaches you a process for the development of clear and compelling messages. You will learn a message development process that helps the audience understand and take actions on your ideas. Your messages will be more interesting, compelling, emotional, and customer focused. If you are responsible for advocating your ideas, this workshop is for you.

The Articulate Scientist Workshop is underpinned by the Articulus Storyboarding Process. This is the same process taught in the Corporate Storytelling Workshop. It is a proven 1-page process for the development of a message. It provides a tool that is more fundamental and effective than the typical outline and PowerPoint slides.

While this workshop is primarily delivered in a classroom workshop environment to enable customization, the Virtual or Blended Corporate Storytelling Workshops can be customized to meet the needs of technical organizations.
